Welcome to the Interiors Insider blog. A place to share helpful insider tips and inspire you on your journey towards a creative carer on your terms.

When I embarked on my journey in the interior design business over a decade ago, the industry felt like a guarded fortress, with secrets closely held and communities scarce. It was a world where sharing knowledge wasn’t the norm.

Today, I’m here to break down those barriers and offer you the shortcut to success that I wish I had when I started. These are the essential steps to fast-track your success in starting an interior design business:

1. Master the Craft of Interior Design

When I first dipped my toes into interior design, I quickly realised the importance of understanding the profession inside out. This isn’t just about having an eye for design; it’s about:

  • Learning how to communicate your vision both visually and verbally.
  • Understanding the importance of project management, from initial meetings to project completion.
  • Gaining familiarity with legal agreements, contracts, and ensuring legal trading.
  • Continuously growing as a designer and making the right industry connections.

2. Establish a Strong Business Foundation

In the early days, I learned that a solid business structure is crucial. This step includes:

  • Basic requirements for running a business and the correct legal structure.
  • Setting up the right insurances and financial systems.
  • Implementing practical structures like internal systems and daily workflows.
  • Ensuring your business aligns with your long-term goals.

3. Develop a Marketing Strategy

The digital age demands a fresh approach to marketing. Here’s what worked for me:

  • Creating a compelling brand that resonates with your target audience.
  • Focusing on a niche market and solving specific client problems.
  • Designing attractive service and pricing guides with the right pricing strategy.
  • Learning to market your services and sell confidently and effectively.

4. Build Your Support Network and Community

In my early days, the lack of community in the interior design industry was a significant hurdle. Here’s how to build a strong network and community for your business:

  • Establish Your Tribe: Connect with other designers, mentors, and professionals in the field. This network becomes invaluable for advice, support, and potential collaborations.
  • Engage in Collaborations: Collaborating with peers can open doors to new opportunities and ideas that you might not have considered on your own.
  • Offer and Seek Mentorship: A mentor who has walked the path can offer guidance, while mentoring others can enhance your understanding and solidify your expertise.
  • Leverage Social Media: Use platforms like Instagram, to connect, share experiences, and grow your professional circle.

5. Overcome Self-Imposed Barriers

The biggest lesson I learned was to distinguish between genuine obstacles and self-made excuses. This involves:

  • Taking responsibility for your actions and becoming self-aware.
  • Facing fears head-on and trusting your intuition.
  • Being open to advice and investing in yourself
  • Taking imperfect action.

Starting my interior design business wasn’t easy, especially in an industry shrouded in secrecy. But with these steps, you can navigate the path more smoothly and confidently. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to grow and every hurdle a chance to leap higher. So, take these lessons, make them your own, and build the interior design business of your dreams.
